Given that there are still people willing to get into fistfights over whether Greedo shot first or not, I'd say so, yes.
I think that's different, because whether or not he chooses to shoot first really says alot about Han's character. Sonic's taste in food? Not so much. Getting into arguments over whether or not Sonic should like Chili Dogs would be more comparable to getting into arguments over what Han's favorite colour should be. And I don't really see much of that kind of arguing outside of Sonic fandom.
